DONCASTER ST LEGER 1828

The 53rd winner of the St Leger, held on Tuesday 16th September 1828 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was The Colonel, a chestnut colt by Whisker out of a sister to Miss Newton, owned by the Hon. Edward Petre. A field of 18 runners contested the race, although there were 80 subscriptions of 25 sovereigns each, which was worth 2000 sovereigns. (Equivalent to £194,400 in 2017)

The early running was made by Jour de Noces, but after 1/2 a mile Velocipede took up the running, maintaining his lead until the Red House. The Colonel then began to make his move, heading the leader at the end of the white rails. He ran on too strongly for the rest of the field, winning by a comfortable 3 lengths in 3 minutes 29 seconds. In a career of 15 races The Colonel was successful in 10 of them, including dead-heating in The Derby. Over Round 102%
